Today, I volunteered for the Barack Obama Campaign to make calls to voters in a battleground state, Nevada. I was hesitant at first about invading people’s privacy, but I knew it would get easier after the first couple of phone calls. I made over fifty phone calls. Most were not home and some had already voted early for Obama. I shared one pleasant conversation with a man, Felipe, who wished to know where i came from and why I volunteered. My list of people to call included mostly older women and men. Most were courteous given some of them have been receiving calls and door to door visits by pollster already.
I spoke to one man who said plainly ” we used to own niggers. I don’t want a nigger running this country.”
Racism never goes away. It is one of the ugliest human traits.
